Celebrating Lebanese Independence Day at San Diego State University: Campus-Wide

SDSU did not know what hit it when November 22, 2011 came around this year. The LSC members had been preparing since September to make Lebanese Independence Day a campus-wide celebration for all Aztecs to enjoy. We started the morning by setting up a booth in the heart of the campus with everything Lebanese: flags galore, scarves, tarabeesh, traditional clothing, and even a hookah! SDSU’s Officer of External Affairs, Ramsey Ayass, even brought loud speakers and a turntable; he DJ’d a variety of Lebanese music, ranging from Fairouz to modern mixes that could be heard from every part of our large campus.

We surprisingly heard no complaints during the duration of our four-hour fiesta. On the contrary, we received many compliments and sparked great interest in the students on campus who wanted to learn more about our day of celebration. We distributed flyers detailing what this day means to the people of Lebanon. Many were surprised to learn that Lebanon has one of the oldest democracies in the world! Our music and displays attracted an array of students, including new members to our club. We had countless students run up to us in excitement at the sounds of Nancy Ajram, just to tell us that they were part-Lebanese, or that they grew up around a Lebanese family. We even encountered a Lebanese professor who wanted to become our advisor for next year! All in all, the members of SDSU’s LSC had a wonderful experience sharing and promoting the Lebanese culture, and look forward to having an even bigger celebration next year!
